Best for: people who want traditional food tracking with an active community

Editorial note: Shelog is a food-tracking app, so we are a competitor of FatSecret. This review combines our hands-on testing in September 2026 with the app's own published feature information. Prices and availability may vary by region, platform, and offer.

FatSecret takes a more traditional approach to food tracking than newer AI-first apps. Meals are organized into breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, and the diary puts calories, macros, and other numbers front and center.

What makes the app more distinctive is its social side. During our testing, we found an active community where people shared meal photos, progress updates, and other posts, and users could follow one another and view profile activity.

We tested FatSecret's onboarding, free food logging, barcode scanner, photo recognition, Premium tools, and community features to see how much of the experience is genuinely useful without paying.

Our overall impression: FatSecret's interface feels more traditional and data-heavy than newer food trackers, but the free experience is practical and easy to access. Its community is the feature that gives the app the most personality.

Our Experience Testing FatSecret

FatSecret had one of the more straightforward signup experiences among the apps we tested. Registration was quick, and once we finished onboarding, we went directly into the free version.

After signup, we went directly into the free version. We weren't shown an immediate paywall or forced trial, so we could start using the diary without first making a subscription decision.

The trade-off is presentation: the diary is dense and number-heavy, giving FatSecret a more traditional calorie-tracker feel than newer visual food journals.

Core Features: How FatSecret Works

FatSecret follows a traditional diary-based tracking model, but it also includes newer logging tools for people who want to reduce manual entry.

Food logging: FatSecret organizes food into breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks/other. Manual food search and barcode scanning were free in our test. We could also take a food photo, which suggested possible foods or ingredients, but the matches weren't always accurate and we still needed to select, add, or search for foods manually. Premium adds Smart Food Scan for a more automated photo-logging experience, as well as Smart Assistant for describing a meal by voice or text.

Smart Food Scan: The Premium version automates more of the photo workflow. It identifies foods, estimates portions, and prepares calorie and nutrition information so the meal can be reviewed and added to the diary more quickly.

Nutrition tracking: FatSecret puts calories and macros front and center, while its reports also provide nutrient information beyond the basic macro breakdown. In our testing, the presentation felt more data-heavy than visual, with meal-by-meal totals and reports taking priority over lifestyle-style insights.

Community: This was the feature that stood out most in our testing. Users shared meal photos, progress updates, and other posts, and we could follow people and open profiles showing posts, followers, following, and progress information. The social activity felt closely connected to food tracking rather than being a separate generic feed.

For people who like social accountability, that community can give FatSecret a reason to open the app beyond simply entering calories.

Pricing and Subscription

FatSecret has two main access levels: Free and Premium. Premium is sold as monthly, quarterly, or annual access. In our test, we saw $14.99 for one month, $19.99 for three months, and a $38.99 annual plan labeled as a limited offer.

Note: FatSecret says Premium pricing varies by region and currency, so the exact price shown in the app may differ from what we saw.

Does FatSecret Offer Discounts?

We weren't shown a separate new-user discount during signup. When we later opened the Premium page, however, the 12-month plan was priced at $38.99 and labeled “Limited Offer.” We therefore treat $38.99 as the promotional price shown during our test rather than a standard annual price every user will receive.

Free vs. Premium

The free version covers the core tracking experience, while Premium mainly adds faster logging, planning, hydration, and convenience tools.

What We Like and Don’t Like

What We Like

  1. Practical free food tracking: Manual logging and core nutrition tracking are available without Premium.

  2. Free barcode scanning: Packaged foods can be logged by barcode without upgrading.

  3. Active food-focused community: The social feed revolves around meals, progress, and accountability rather than feeling disconnected from tracking.

  4. Low-pressure entry: We weren't pushed into a trial or immediate subscription screen after signup.

What We Don’t Like

  1. Dense, traditional interface: The diary is number-heavy and less visually engaging than newer trackers.

  2. Free photo matching still needs manual work: The camera flow we tested could suggest foods or ingredients, but we still had to review, select, add, or search for foods ourselves.

  3. Water tracking requires Premium: A relatively basic tracking feature sits behind the subscription.

  4. Faster logging tools require Premium: Smart Food Scan and Smart Assistant are reserved for paid users.

Who Is FatSecret Best For?

FatSecret is best suited to people who want a traditional food diary and like having a social layer around their tracking. It may be especially suitable for:

• People who want useful food-logging basics without immediately paying.

• Users who prefer a structured breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack diary.

• People who want free barcode scanning for packaged foods.

• Users who enjoy sharing progress or following others for accountability.

It's less suitable if you prefer a minimalist, highly visual interface or want AI-assisted logging to be the center of the experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the FatSecret app really free?

Is the FatSecret barcode scanner free?

Yes. Barcode scanning was available in the free version during our testing, making it one of FatSecret's more useful free convenience features for packaged foods.

Does FatSecret have a food scanner?

Yes. FatSecret offers Smart Food Scan as a Premium feature. It uses a meal photo to identify foods and help prepare them for logging. In our test of the free version, taking a photo could suggest possible foods or ingredients, but we still needed to review, select, add, or search for foods manually.

Does FatSecret have a community?

Yes. The community was one of FatSecret's strongest features in our test. We found meal photos, progress updates, posts, profiles, and the ability to follow other users, giving the app a social layer closely tied to food tracking and accountability.

How much does FatSecret Premium cost?

During our 2026 testing, FatSecret showed Premium at $14.99 for one month, $19.99 for three months, and $38.99 for 12 months, with the annual option labeled as a limited offer. Prices may vary by region, platform, account, and time.

Is FatSecret worth it?

FatSecret can make sense if you want traditional food tracking with an active community. The free version already covers many core needs, including barcode scanning, so Premium is more relevant if you specifically want faster assisted logging, meal planning, water tracking, and other convenience features.
